Season three of Only Murders In The Building might have ended with, well, yet another murder in the building, but there’s plenty more where that came from as the fourth season has been confirmed and is on its way.

The series’ season three premiere in August 2023 marked the highest-rated Hulu episode of the entire year, and the show unsurprisingly nabbed nearly a dozen Emmy nominations, making expectations for the next season even higher.

But not everything will be quite the same in the fourth season. Craig Erwich, Disney Television Group President, recently told Deadline teased that in the fourth season, the sleuth collective will actually relocate from New York City to sunny Los Angeles.

‘I’m very excited to see Steve, Martin, and Selena take a little break from the apartment building and come to Los Angeles,’ Erwich said. ‘So in the same way that John Hoffman [showrunner] used the canvas of Broadway to tell what I think was one of the most unique seasons you’ve ever seen, the same unique Only Murders take will be applied to Los Angeles, which I’m really excited about.’

That’s not all, as the plot and cast is also expecting a shake-up as the DIY detectives head to the west coast. This is everything we know so far about Only Murders In The Building season four.

What will the plot of Only Murders In The Building season 4 be?

While the exact plot line has yet to be unveiled, there are a few easy starting points to assume that season four will start from. In the final moments of the the season three finale, Sazz, played by Glee's Jane Lynch, stopped by Charles, played by Steve Martin's, apartment to celebrate the success of the Broadway show Death Razzle Dazzle’s opening night. But before she could get too comfortable, a bullet flew in from the window and struck her in the chest. As the episode drew to a close, Sazz appeared to write a message on the floor with her own blood, which has lead fans to assume that season four's killer will come for Charles next.

That's not to say that Lynch's character will be ruled out completely though as she recently revealed that she'll be joining the cast to film for the fourth season, albeit posthumously. 'I'm the murder victim, which is not a tease... and so I have some really great flashbacks,' Lynch said, according to Screen Rant.

Co-creator John Hoffman previously teased that season four will explore the topic of consequences. 'I think the idea of what you create is a thing you put out to the world, and sometimes you can’t be prepared for the repercussions of what potentially the world does with your thing, and how they feel about it,' he told The Hollywood Reporter. 'That’s a challenging line to walk, and sometimes you have to face it in that way. So, the podcast and everything else that’s happened, and what it all means, and what it could have been meaning all along. That’s a really interesting world to look at for these three who stepped in that way.'

While he didn't elaborate on specifics of the storyline, speaking to People on May 2 about the upcoming season, which has been filming in New York City, Martin said: 'And I'm going to say we're about halfway through, and we are really enjoying this season. We think it could be one of our best seasons. Although they're all flawless.'

Who will make up the cast of Only Murders In The Building season 4?

As reported by Deadline, the fourth season will see the central trio of Oliver, played by Martin Short, Mabel, played by Selena Gomez and Charles travel to Los Angeles before returning back to The Arconia to hunt down Sazz’s killer.

Meryl Streep is also set to reprise her role as Loretta Durkin, a struggling actress who begins a relationship with Oliver, although the trajectory of their storyline is currently unclear.

As reported by Variety, new additions have been made to the fourth season. Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, Eva Longoria and Molly Shannon will join the cast, although details of their characters or placement in the storyline have yet to be announced.

According to Deadline, however, the series' quartet of new characters will be integral to the twists and turns of the investigation into the murder of Sazz.

When will Only Murders In The Building season 4 air?

While an exact release date is yet to be announced, Hulu announced that the series would be renewed for another season on the day the season finale aired in October. Less than a week later, on October 9, the show's writers returned to work, so watch this space.
