We all need to be a little more Melissa McCarthy. Speaking to a Page Six reporter outside of the Broadway opening of her new play Suffs this week, the Bridesmaids actor defended her friend, Meghan Markle, calling her ‘wonderful’ and ‘awesome.’

‘It bums me out for every woman and every person, that for no reason people just like to attack,’ she said. ‘A smart interesting woman that has her own life, for some reason, is incredibly threatening to some people.’

She then elucidated further, adding: ‘I always think, how inspiring! I’ve never once been threatened by someone who is amazing. I just think how inspiring. It’s really on the people throwing the hate.’

McCarthy’s friendship with Markle can be dated back to 2021 when she first starred in a tongue-in-cheek video honouring the Duchess of Sussex’s 40th birthday and the launch of her mentorship programme, 40x40. Speaking about her appearance after the video, which also jokingly starred Prince Harry, premiered, McCarthy told Access Hollywood: ‘They were so sweet and funny. I just found them very inspiring. They’re carving out their own lives. They’re carving out their lives for their kids.’

McCarthy also called the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's dynamic ‘so cute’ during an appearance on Lorraine, adding that the Nine Perfect Strangers star said Meghan's ‘whole face lit up’ when Harry walked in the room.

Markle has had quite the year already, after signing a new podcast deal with female-founded podcast network, Lemonada Media, which will also distribute her former Spotify podcast Archetypes. The former Suits star also soft-launched her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, earlier this year, a landmark she celebrated by sending fifty branded jars of the label's soon-to-launch homemade jam to her friends.
