Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are expecting their second child, the couple have confirmed.

Representatives for the couple confirmed that the Sussexes are 'overjoyed' to be expecting another baby together.

'We can confirm Archie is going to be a big brother,' a spokesperson for the couple told the BBC. 'The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.'

A picture was also shared of the couple, enjoying the outdoors, confirming their exciting announcement.

In the black and white image, taken remotely by Misan Harriman - a longtime friend of the couple -, Meghan is lying on the grass resting her head on her husband's leg while cradling her baby bump. Prince Harry tenderly strokes her hair as he smiles down at his wife.

'Meg, I was there at your wedding to witness this love story begin, and my friend, I am honoured to capture it grow, [sic]' Harriman commented in a caption sharing the photo on her Instagram page. 'Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on this joyous news!'

The couple, who have spent the majority of the past year in California after stepping back from their roles as senior members of the royal family and becoming financially independent from the monarchy, are already parents to their one-year-old son, Archie.

In 2018, months after the couple tied the knot during their royal wedding at St George's Chapel in Windsor, Kensington Palace confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were expecting their first child together.

Their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, was born at 05.26am on Monday, May 6, 2019 at a London hospital. He is currently seventh in line to the throne.

In November 2020, Meghan wrote a brave essay for the New York Times disclosing for the first time that she had suffered a miscarriage last year. In the essay, the Duchess of Sussex recounted the experience (which had happened in July), writing: 'I knew as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second.' The royal was praised for writing about her loss so openly in the powerful essay.

'Despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with (unwarranted) shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning,' Meghan wrote.

Meghan and Harry, who are continuing with their philanthropic endeavours since relocating across the pond, have named their charitable foundation in honour of their son, calling it Archewell.
